Fishing at Dad’s

Posted in addictions, amusements, friends and family at 10:45 am by spryken

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I took Matt and Cory with me to Mom and Dad’s. Dad warned us to bring the fishing gear. He was going to take us to a friend’s pond. We all caught fish, but this is the prize. Matt pulled a 2 1/4 pound Large Mouth Bass out. He was using a small Bream that one of the other kids had caught for bait.

Of course the real story of the day is “The one that got away”. My brother, Gary, had given up. He had been skunked, the only one who had not caught a fish. He had a line in, not really paying attention, when he got a big strike. He was using 14 pound test line, but did not have his drag set well. The fish never gave him a chance. It snapped the line within seconds. The line sounded like a bullet when it snapped.

Talk about disappointed, upset, frustrated……etc.

Oh well, that’s what keeps you coming back.

Ok, I had to get in that Matt and I went to Philmont last year. And since I wanted to test posting a image file, I thought this would be the time.

WineWiki Is Going Away

Posted in Wine, addictions, amusements at 1:59 pm by spryken

It is with regret that I have to report that winewiki.com is going away.  WineWiki was a great idea that just didn’t make it.

It was supposed to be a place for anyone to share a wine review.  Wine reviews for the everyday person.  Unfortunately, no one would post reviews.  I had several people sign up, but they never posted.

So, I will be adding some wine reviews here.  I will also move some of my Wine Rambles to this site.  I must admit, that the experiment has expanded my horizons.  I have learned more about wiki’s, php and blogging.

Stay tuned…..Wine Rambles to follow……

Sudoku

Posted in addictions, comics, games at 11:38 am by spryken

Unless you have many hours to burn, avoid this game at all costs!!

Sudoku is a crossword style puzzle. Meaning that is played on a grid like a crossword. There are no words involved, just numbers. But don’t worry, no math either. I won’t go into explaining the rules here, check out the website.

My rant is on the amount of time I spend on the game. I started playing online last year at DailyInk.com (no affiliation). I started playing print versions in the newspaper last Thanksgiving. The difference is the online version is computer generated (a Java Applet) and is not necessarily a “logical” game. That is, there may be more than 1 correct solution and you reach a point where you have to guess. The print versions are “logical”. There is only 1 correct solution and you should never have to guess. I would suggest the print version for that reason.

I have spent hours working the puzzles. The ones I really like are hard - extremely. Sometimes I like the easy ones, but I really like the ones that take a long time to solve. Of course, as you work you learn more and better strategies and so your working time decreases.

Sudoku has all the traits for a great individual game. It is simple to learn, challenging enough to keep you interested and addictive. As if I have time for that…. That’s why I refuse to buy computer games. I know that I will burn away productive hours sitting in front of the computer……..wait a minute…..that’s what I’m doing now…….

Oh well, there are worse addictions than Sudoku and blogging……… ;)
